According to media sources, Rodrigo is a pop musician who channels 1990s alternative rock while also producing music in the pop rock, teen pop, and indie pop genres. Since Interscope/Geffen Records CEO John Janick commended Rodrigo’s songwriting rather than her “potential star quality,” the singer-songwriter has stated unequivocally that becoming a songwriter is her objective, not becoming “the biggest pop star that ever lived.”
Music critic Laura Snapes described Rodrigo as a “flag-bearer” for a new wave of composers who write power ballads “as emotional as ever, but project that emotion inward, trading bombast for hush.” Furthermore, she also described her sound as rooted in sadness, mental illness, and heartache without being overly dramatic and as communicating more realistic viewpoints than resilient.
