Sophie Pascoe (Dame Sophie Frances Pascoe) is a professional swimmer from New Zealand. Unfortunately, she has a disability, but without taking care of her disability, continued her passion for swimming. Because of her disability, Sophie participated in a unique Paralympic Games competition. She started her swimming career in these games in 2008. She received many awards in her entire career, like eleven gold medals, seven silver medals, and one bronze medal. Undoubtedly, she is the best Paralympian in the history of New Zealand.

On September 23, 1995, When Sophie was just two years old, an unfortunate incident happened. Sophie was playing near the grass, and her father used a lawnmower to cut grass; meanwhile, the lawnmower ran on Sophie. After this accident, she lost her left leg below the knee, and her right leg was injured very brutally.  After recovering from this incident, she cannot walk properly forever and ever.

Firstly, she went to Halswell Primary School to complete his basic education. Secondly, she went to another school called Lincoln High School to continue her further education.

When she was seven years old, she started her swimming career. Her coach (Roly Crichton), trained her to become an excellent swimmer. QEII Swim Club is a famous swim club in Christchurch, where she got training. QEII Swim Club was located in Queen Elizabeth II Park, but after a strong earthquake in 2011, their founders decided to move to Jellie Park permanently.

Pascoe is good at swimming in different styles like freestyle, backstroke, and butterfly. Pascoe competes in different categories for different swimming styles, like S10 Category, SB9 Category, and SM10 Category.

In 2008, during the Summer Paralympics, Pascoe won some medals. She got a gold medal for swimming 100 meters breaststroke and a silver one for swimming 100 meters butterfly. Later, she participated in a 200-meter race and won a gold medal where the swimmer covered four styles (butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke, and freestyle) in one race, each for a specified distance. 

Another 100-meter backstroke swimming race in which she competed with Shireen Sapiro, they both finished simultaneously, so she shared the gold medal with Shireen Sapiro. Pascoe was only 15 years old then and was the youngest athlete from New Zealand to compete in the Paralympics.

In 2008, Mitsubishi Motors conducted a big contest, and many people voted for Pascoe as their favorite swimmer. She won a prize called a Mitsubishi VRX Outlander at this contest.

In 2009, Pascoe was given a special title called a member of the New Zealand Order of Merit. Then, in February 2012, Pascoe won an important award called the Disabled Sports Person of the Year. This happened at a special event called the Halberg Awards. She was the very first winner of this award.

In 2012, there was a unique sports competition called the Paralympics. Four of these races were ones she had competed in before and won medals.

Pascoe received another gold medal for swimming fast in the 100-meter butterfly race.  This time, she did better because she won a silver medal in Beijing at the previous Paralympics. But in 2012, she won the gold medal and even set a new world record. Her time was 1 minute, 4.43 seconds.

In March 2013, she broke her world record in the 50-meter butterfly race. This happened during a swimming competition (New Zealand Swimming Championships) in Auckland. Now, she set a record of 29.21 seconds.

In the 2016 Paralympic Games held in Rio de Janeiro, Pascoe took part in five swimming races. However, she decided not to participate in the 100-meter breaststroke SB9 race.

In the 2020 Paralympic Games, Pascoe participated in two swimming events. During this, she won a silver medal in the Women’s 100-meter breaststroke SB8 race and a bronze medal in the Women’s 100-meter backstroke S9 race. In 2022, Pascoe received a special honor.
