Broderick Stephen Harvey, the son of coal miner Jesse Harvey and Eloise Vera, was born in Welch, West Virginia, on January 17, 1957. Interestingly, he was given the first name Broderick in honor of Highway Patrol star Broderick Crawford. Harvey stuttered badly as a child but eventually got over it. When Harvey was in the sixth grade, his teacher asked him and his classmates what their ambitions were, and he said that he wanted to be on TV when he grew up.
