The daughter of teacher Etti (Henrietta) and journalist Sheldon Kirshner, who contributed to The Canadian Jewish News, Kirshner was born in Toronto, Ontario. Kirshner is the granddaughter of Holocaust survivors; her mother, a Bulgarian Jewish immigrant, met her father in the camp for internally displaced people at Bad Reichenhall in Germany in 1946 after they fled to Israel. Lauren Kirshner, her younger sister and a writer, worked on the I Live Here initiative.
Having grown up in a middle-class family, Kirshner first attended Forest Hill Collegiate Institute before earning his diploma from Jarvis Collegiate Institute. Kirshner attended McGill University in Montreal to study Russian literature and the film industry of the 20th century.

According to an article published on September 5, 2019, by Entertainment Tonight’s news outlet ET Online, Kirshner and co-star Penelope Ann Miller will portray characters in the Lifetime movie The College Admissions Scandal. Kirshner and Ben Savage were to co-star in the Hallmark Channel holiday movie Love, Lights, Hanukkah!, which debuted on December 12, 2020, it was reported in September 2020. Kirshner portrays Christina, a restaurant owner who discovers via a DNA test that she is descended from Jews.

Kirshner co-produced the book I Live Here with writer James MacKinnon and former Adbusters staff members Paul Shoebridge and Michael Simons, and it was released in October 2008, following seven years of production. Four distinct groups of women and children who are refugees from Chechnya, Juárez, Burma, and Malawi share their life stories in the book. Original content from well-known comic and graphic artists, such as Joe Sacco and Phoebe Gloeckner, is included in the book. In the United States, Random House/Pantheon her book was published.
